Vasectomy A vasectomy is a simple procedure to produce sterilization by removing a piece of the vas deferens (sperm duct) above each testicle. Sperm are still produced in the testicles but are broken down and absorbed by your body since they can no longer be transported through the blocked vas deferens. Male hormone production, ability to function sexually, and ability to urinate are unchanged. When you arrive for your appointment, you will be asked to complete some paperwork and then will meet with your doctor. The procedure will be discussed in more detail and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. The vasectomy will then be performed in the office under a local anesthetic and will take approximately 20-30 minutes. Following this procedure, you will need to have someone drive you home. See our payment information.
PREOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS Before coming to the office please shave your pubic hair as shown. Begin at least one inch above the base of the penis and include ALL the hair around the penis, on the scrotal sac and on the inside of the thighs next to the scrotum. Then shower to remove loose hairs. Please do not use powder or cream on the skin after shaving. Wear clean underwear to the office. We recommend an athletic supporter. Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication (such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Nuprin) for seven days prior to your appointment. These increase the risk of bleeding. PAYMENT AND/OR INSURANCE Our fee for bilateral vasectomy includes the procedure, a follow up office visit if needed and semen checks until two consecutive negative specimens are found. Insurance procedure code is 55250. Our policy is to ask for prepayment at the time of service unless you have documented insurance coverage. In this case bring a completed insurance form and we will submit it for you. Please understand that amounts of insurance coverage vary and that you will be responsible prior to the procedure for deductibles, co-pay, or any other amount not paid by insurance. We do accept VISA and MASTERCARD. The pieces of the vas deferens removed are sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination. This is standard practice when tissue is removed by a surgical procedure. The fee for this will be sent by the laboratory to you or your insurance company depending on your coverage. Again, you will be responsible to the laboratory for any balance due after insurance payment. POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
